The main reason for the increase in 2015: The Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) was established on 1st April 2015, and because AMED was in charge of managing the respective life science research support projects carried at each ministry, the support system that had been in place until 2014 was switched to a commissioned project (funded research at Kyushu University).
"Funded Research" refers to research to a university by a private sector company, etc., in which, in most cases, the university, etc. alone conducts the research and development, with the expenses incurred being covered by the private organization, etc.
